HISTORY

The Peoples Baptist Church Senior Usher board was organized under the pastorate of Rev. David S. Klugh, the second pastor of Peoples Baptist Church based on information obtained from a 1985 historical report.  Most of the historical information through 1985 was obtained from a historical report prepared under the presidency of Sis. Deloris Sealy.  The senior usher board was first organized by Bro. Earnest Slaughter and his wife Sis. Slaughter.  According to Mrs. Estelle Sullivan, their daughter the Slaughter’s organized and co-chaired the senior usher board in the 1920’s.  The exact date is undetermined.  The Slaughters worked as a team.  Bro. Slaughter was the Chairman of the men ushers and Sis. Slaughter was the Chairman of the women ushers.    The Slaughters served as the first chairmen of the senior usher board of Peoples Baptist Church (PBC) for many years.

Bro. William H. Green served as the 2nd president of the senior usher board (1938-1958).

Bro. Sherman Busby served as the 3rd president (1959).  He also served as the treasurer of the senior usher board for many years.

Bro. Richard Diggs served as the 4th president (1960-1967).

Bro. Cicero Jones served as the 5th President (1968).

Bro. Lilbert Ward served as the 6th president. (1969-1977). He was also the first vice president of the State and a member of the board of directors under the leadership of Mabel A. Grey (State President) and a member of the ushers chorus for many years.

Sis. Marguerite Johnson served as the 7th president (1977-1979).  She also was a member of the board of directors, state of Massachusetts for many years.

Bro. Neville Lewis served as the 8th President (1979-1981).

Sis. Deloris Sealy served as the 9th President (1981-1993).  She also served as the financial secretary for the state of Massachusetts for many years.

Sis. Williemae Woodberry served as the 10th President (1994–1998).  In addition to serving as PBC usher president, Sis. Woodberry also served as the financial secretary for the school of ushering state of Massachusetts.

Sis. Miriam Cox served as the 11th President (1999-2000). She served as supervisor to the PBC junior usher board for many years.  She was also responsible for organizing the young adult usher board at PBC and served as vice president under Bro. Neville Lewis and Sis. Deloris Sealey.  Sis. Cox was a Greater Boston Junior Usher Supervisor and organized the first Greater Boston Candlelight service for the Juniors.  The first service was held on December 2, 1979 at Peoples Baptist Church.   Sis. Cox also served as the chairman for the board of directors, state of Massachusetts for a number of years.

Sis. Burnell Singleton began serving as the 12th President of the senior usher board in 2001 and is still serving as president (2001 – present (2017).  Sis. Singleton also served as the financial secretary, state of Massachusetts for four years and served on the board of directors for two years.

Peoples Baptist Church Senior Usher Board was one of several other church usher boards that were organized in April 1945 as The Interdenominational Church Ushers Association of New England in Boston, Massachusetts at the Charles St. A.M.E Church.  Brother Ralph Epps was the organizer and the first state president the first state usher president.

Sis. Mabel A. Grey, a member of Peoples Baptist Church senior usher board was elected as the Sixth State Usher president in 1968.  She served as president for the state of Massachusetts from 1968-1983.  Under the leadership of Sister Grey, the church usher boards began having their ushers’ candlelight services (1969/1970).  Sis. Grey also served as the supervisor to the Peoples Baptist Church Junior Usher Board for many years.  In addition, Sis. Grey was appointed to the National United Ushers Association of America Speakers Bureau (now the Dept. of Education) from 1949 until her resignation in 1985.

During morning service on April 22, 1990, the Senior Usher Board of Peoples Baptist Church was dedicated the Mabel A. Grey Senior Usher Board.

The Mabel A. Grey Senior Usher Board of Peoples Baptist Church celebrates its annual candlelight services on the first Sunday in November at 6:00pm.

The mission / vision of the Mabel A. Grey Senior Usher Board are to assist the Pastor in making the worship experience of the congregation a pleasant one.  This is accomplished by pleasantly greeting all members and guests and ensuring they are comfortably seated and provided with programs and other   information and necessities.  In addition, we strive to be a source of Christian inspiration, encouragement and support through service and fellowship with our congregation and our fellow ushers.
