Twelfth Baptist Church Usher’s – History

1840 Twelfth Baptist Church was founded

  • Our first pastor was the late Rev. George Black.
  • It was under the direction of Rev. William Hester that the TBC Senior Ushers’ were organized.
  • Working with the pastor Sister Mary Riley organized the ministry.
  • The first ministry consisted of three separate groups with a total membership of thirty.

1940 Sister Mary Riley became the first president of TBC Senior Ushers

  • Sister Riley served as president from 1940-1960.

1945 TBC Senior Ushers became a member of ICUA of New England, Inc. State of Massachusetts

1960 Brother Ernest Herndon became the second president of TBC Senior Ushers

1965 Rev. Michael E. Haynes installed as pastor of Twelfth Baptist Church on October 24, 1965.

1966 Sister Ethel McPhearson became the third president of the TBC Senior Ushers Ministry

1967 Sister Bernadine Holford elected president of our organizational leadership

  • Our church and its’ minister saw major changes during Sister Holford’s term of office.

1981 Emery Stephens elected chaplain of NUCUAA INC. Junior & Young Peoples Department

  •  Brother Walter Mitchell recogonized as a Faithful Usher

1984 The reigns of leadership passed to Sister Juanita Jones as the 5th president of our ministry.

  • Due to relocation Sister Kay Williams became the 6th president.

1984 Twelfth Baptist Church proclaimed April 8, 1984 as Berndine L. Holford Day

1985 An appreciation luncheon was given for Sister Bernadine L. Holford

1986  Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers became the president of TBC Senior Ushers

  • Sister Lucy Walker appointed chairperson of the Greater Boston Sick Committee.

1987  The Junior Usher Board was revived under the leadership of Sister Deloris( Coren) Rodriguez

1989 Brother Ernest Herndon and Sister Beatrice McWilliams were honored by ICUA of New England Inc. State of MA.

  • Sister Beatrice McWilliams elected to the Board of Directors for ICUA of New England Inc., State of   MA
  • Mrs.  Bernadine L. Holford became Honorary President of TBC Senior Ushers.
  • Brother Hozel Murray (former 1st Vice President of TBC Senior Ushers) ordained as a deacon.

1989 Brother Ernest Herndon and Sister Beatrice McWilliams were honored by ICUA of New England Inc. State of MA.

  • Sister Beatrice McWilliams elected to the Board of Directors for ICUA of New England Inc., State of   MA
  • Mrs.  Bernadine L. Holford became Honorary President of TBC Senior Ushers.
  • Brother Hozel Murray (former 1st Vice President of TBC Ushers) ordained as a deacon.

1990 Ushers held a banquet at Phillips Old Colony to recognize Mrs. Bernadine Holford as Honorary President

1991 Ushers held a banquet at Phillips Old Colony to honor those who served with distinction:

  • Sister Mary Riley –  1st President
  • Sister Ethel McPherson – 2nd President
  • Brother Frank Bell – Faithful Usher

1992 Ushers held a banquet at Phillip Old Colony to honor those who served with distinction:

  • Sister Maceiola Taylor – Faithful Usher
  • Sister Claudia M. Hardrick – Faithful Usher
  • Brother Ernest Herndon – 2nd Vice President

1995 Ushers held a banquet at Albert’s Restaurant to honor those who served with distinction:

  • Brother John Keys – Faithful Usher
  • Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers  -President
  • Brother Robert Thompson – Faithful Usher

1995 Sister Maceiola Taylor made mother of the ICUA of New England Inc., State of Massachusetts.

1996 Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers elected Recording Secretary of ICUA of N.E.

1998 Sister Ethel Whitehead-Pinckney elected Recording Secretary of ICUA of N.E.

  • Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers elected to the ICUA of NE Board of Directors.
  • The junior ushers of TBC held their first “Youth Exhibit for Christ” Sister Ethel Whitehead-Pinckney was their supervisor.

2003 Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers elected Vice Chairperson for the ICUA of NE Board of Directors

2004 Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers elected Assistant Recording Secretary for the National Alumni Department

2005 Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers appointed chairperson for the William H. Davis Honor Club.

2006 Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers elected Chairperson for the ICUA of NE Board of Directors.

Banquet held at Phillips Old Colony House to honor those who have served:

  • Sister Anna Ekpenyong              Faithful Usher
  • Brother Walter Mitchell             Faithful Usher

2008 Sister Dorothy “Mae” Smith was recognized by ICUA of NE as an outstanding usher from Twelfth Baptist Church.

2009 Brother James Pinckney was recognized by ICUA of NE as an outstanding usher from Twelfth Baptist Church.

2010 Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers stepped down as chairperson for William H. Davis Honor Club.

  • Sister Lucy Walker was recognized by ICUA of NE as an outstanding usher from Twelfth Baptist Church.

2011 Sister Mamie Thomas was recognized by ICUA of NE as an outstanding usher from Twelfth Baptist Church.

2012 Sister Deloris Rodriguez was recognized by ICUA of NE as an outstanding usher from Twelfth Baptist Church.

2016 Pastor Arthur T. Gerald, Jr. recognized by ICUA of New England for his leadership and support of the organization

  • Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers recognized by ICUA of New England for leadership provided to TBC Senior Ushers

2017 Twelfth Baptist Church received first place recognition from ICUA of New England Scholarship Committee for collecting the most pennies at a candlelight service.

2018 Twelfth Baptist held their 72nd annual candlelight service.  Rev. Julian Cook, pastor of St. Mark Congregational Church delivered a powerful message to all in attendance.

  • Sister S. Frances Glenn-Chalmers appointed chairperson of William H. Davis Honor  Club.
